Bach’s Magnificat

December 3, 2016 at 7:30 PM
Norris Center for the Performing Arts

Johann Sebastian Bach’s setting of Mary’s song was his first major liturgical composition with a Latin text, written in 1723 for Christmas Day. Its festive and majestic tone is reflected in Bach’s rich Baroque texture of instrumental and vocal polyphony. Our evening will culminate in celebratory Christmas carols with audience participation. Come celebrate this season with us as the JMN Singers, accompanied by a professional instrumental ensemble and operatic soloists, fill the hall with joyous sound!

Lux Aeterna

April 2, 2017 at 7:30 PM
Pre-concert Lecture at 6:30 PM
Norris Center for the Performing Arts

Morten Lauridsen wrote:  “Lux Aeterna—Eternal Light—is an intimate work of quiet serenity centered around a universal symbol of hope, reassurance, goodness and illumination at all levels. It is fashioned on texts from several different Latin sources, including the Requiem Mass, each containing a reference to light. The conjunct and flowing melodic lines contributing to the works’ overall lyricism and the chant-like phrase structures creating a seamlessness throughout certainly have their underpinnings in the chant literature.” The JMN Singers will feature more of Lauridsen’s music in the second half with gems such as: “O Magnum Mysterium”, “Sure on This Shining Night,” “Dirait On” and others.
